May 31, 2011 - Prompt 1

We are afraid of truth, afraid of fortune, afraid of death, and afraid of each other. Our age yields no great and perfect persons.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

You just discovered you have fifteen minutes to live.

1. Set a timer for fifteen minutes.
2. Write the story that has to be written.

  • Three minutes each in phone calls to my children, making sure they know what is special about each of them, how they each deserve the greatest love, and encouragement to keep reaching.
  • Two minutes in a call to my sister for being motherly when I, like a newborn foal, couldn't stand on my own two legs when Mom died and for her many other acts of kindness and tolerance.
  • Two minutes in prayer for forgiveness from the men I've wronged [especially that one], for gratitude to my teammates and colleagues who let me feel the warmth of their bright lights, and to repent. It's worth a shot.
  • Two minutes to find a quiet spot where I can lay down, calm my breath, and fade away privately and in silence.
Fifteen minutes isn't that much time, but it could be all the time in the world, couldn't it?
